Good morning Carter, it's Tutu. Yesterday I was out in the forest with my favorite Tutu Cedar tree. It's a very rainy day, I'm staying inside the vardo but Tutu Pete is out in the rain, driving in his big yellow truck with his tools. He might start digging with his shovel to see what it's like to dig a long hole -- a trench -- to connect our wheelie home with our friend Hopi's home. This is Hopi. Yesterday, Steph (short for Stephanie), one of the five people who live here at Camp Bamboo came home with two new hens. Hens lay eggs. This morning we heard a new sound, a sound we haven't heard since Tutu Pete and I lived  in the woods with our chickens. The sound we heard this morning was  the sound of a hen laying an egg.  It's a very loud and happy sound. She was giving birth. Like when your Mama gave birth to you! So, here at Camp Bamboo we are five people, four goats, five chickens (also called hens), one dog and one cat. When Tutu Pete figures out what to d

Every child needs at least one adult who is irrationally crazy about him or her." - The Real Trick to Staying Young Forever Carter, Carter! It's me Tutu. I'm waiting for Tutu Pete to come inside so we can watch The Muppet Movie. The Muppets are puppets and one of the muppets is Kermit. You know Kermit, he's been singing The Rainbow Connection to you over here ... since you were swimming in your personal ocean, and we called you "Little Frog." The Muppet Movie was fun and silly. Maybe, someday you can watch it and decide if it's fun and silly to you. OH, OH, today is your one month birthday. How about that!  This picture is your Mommy and Daddy planting your 'iewe in the ground with a sprouted Avocado. You two will grow strong and fruitful! That's your godmother Mele with your Mom and Dad. Ahhhh, your family, our family. I'm writing this mo'o story thinking about my Ma, your great-tutu. Once upon a time she used to tell me stories about be

The Mo'o Quilt

Once upon a time, Carter, there was a mo'o. This mo'o was an old woman who had so many stories living in her it was sometimes hard to tell where one story started and the next began.  So, that clever old woman took to her favorite tools, and began to sew and stitch. The Mo'o had bits and pieces of cloth that she was fond of. One bit was actually old pillow cases, washed and cleaned, and filled with the dreams and journeys that spilled from your Two Tutu's heads when they slept upon the pillowcases.  The other bit of cloth was a colorful, never-used before cloth filled with Bird of Paradise flowers.  The Mo'o cut and laid out the two bits of cloth imagining how a blanket could be sown together to be a story quilt for a very special family -- her family/your family, Carter -- who lives across the Great Moana Nui, the great big Pacific Ocean.  Once a picture was pa'a in The Mo'o's mind she pulled out her sewing machine and sewed the bits of cloth that had B

Earwig and the Witch

Good morning "Frog", Here I am again, leaving you stories from here, and sending them over the wings of those internet butterflies, to get to you over there. Today is my brother's birthday. His name is David, Kawika, in Hawaiian. Your daddy's name is also Kawika. He -- your daddy -- wore that name in the middle of his full name for a lot of years. Later, when he was older he decided it was time to wear that name 'Kawika' more of the time. You'll hear your mom and lots of other people calling his Kawika all the time. Names are like that ... so, just saying. Anyway.  You probably won't meet my brother David, in your life but he has grandchildren, just like your Two Tutus have you. Maybe, some day you'll hook up with those grandchildren. They would be cousins to you. I'm writing this story-post as a kind of birthday present for my brother, and something for you to know about. (You might come back here some day and nose around ... being curious).
